Singapore - KUNGFU JUNGLE 一个人的武林 kicks its way to no. 1, becoming the first Asian film to dominate the top spot this year with US$632,800 from 44 screens for a hefty US$14,382 screen average. However, it's only the 4th highest grossing debut for an Asian title this year, behind THE LION MEN 狮神决战 (US$935,042), THE MONKEY KING 西游记之大闹天空 (US$746,318 including sneaks) and FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 赌城风云 (US$695,072).
This is action star Donnie Yen's third blockbuster release in 2014 following THE MONKEY KING (US$1,198,233 total) in January and ICEMAN 冰封侠:重生之门 (US$887,171 total) in April.
Other debuts include animated film THE BOOK OF LIFE (US$185,839 including sneaks; also available in 3D / 28 screens); romance comedy LOVE, ROSIE (US$87,340 / 11 screens); drama fantasy horror HORNS (US$21,137 / 6 screens); South Korean horror MOURNING GRAVE (US$13,473 / 6 screens); Taiwanese romance comedy MY GEEKY NERDY BUDDIES 大宅门 (US$13,067 / 3 screens); horror flick SX TAPE (figures unavailable / edited for R21 rating) and the 7th local release of the year, the Malay girl boxer sports drama, BANTING (figures unavailable).
Overall, the Top 10 films grossed US$1,858,477, which is up 12.1% from last weekend; and 53.39% behind the same frame last year when THOR: THE DARK WORLD exploded with a mighty debut at the top.
