SINGAPORE - TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opens on 150 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D) for a gargantuan US$4,171,943. That makes it the widest release to date, as well as the highest grossing film from Thursday through Sunday during its opening weekend. It also helps to set a new record for the highest grossing weekend haul by the Top 10 films (with AGE OF EXTINCTION contributing 86.38% to the total).
The previous widest release was THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 on 134 screens just two months ago, while the biggest 4-day opening weekend gross was previously set by IRON MAN 3 with US$3,761,476 last year. The Top 10 films also sold US$4,829,695 worth of tickets - a new peak that exceeds the summer blockbuster weekend of June 2, 2011 when X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and KUNG FU PANDA 2 led the box office to a total cume of US$4,236,701.
The latest Transformers pic also opened bigger than any other films in the franchise, besting the US$4,162,564 opening of 2011's DARK OF THE MOON (which included sneaks), but its screen average of US$27,813 is marginally behind DARK OF THE MOON's US$28,128. DARK OF THE MOON is currently the 4th highest grossing film of all time with a gross of US$9,181,891 (S$11,106,966), and AGE OF EXTINCTION looks set to overtake that achievement if sales hold. It's already the 4th highest grossing film of 2014.
Only THE AVENGERS, currently the highest grossing film of all time grossed more by the end of its first weekend. But that's because its first weekend cume of US$5,766,054 included 3 additional days of screenings as the film opened on a Tuesday (which also happened to be a public holiday) and sneaked on a Monday.
With no other new films opening this weekend, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 crosses the US$3m mark in its 3rd weekend with US$3,300,316 to date. The highest grossing animated film of the year is now also the the 7th highest grossing film of 2014. Meanwhile, the highest grossing romance of the year, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS joins the US$1m club in its 2nd weekend with a US$1,168,221 cume to date.
Local releases THE LION MEN: ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN 狮神决战之终极一战 has grossed US$822,678 after three weekends, while MEETING THE GIANT 再见巨人's gross after two weekends stands short at US$93,698. THE LION MEN: ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN is trailing the first film by almost half, which had grossed US$1,572,885 by its 3rd weekend on its way to a US$1,668,382 final.
Overall, the record-breaking heights of this weekend's Top 10 films is a 89.2% leap from the last weekend; and a 34.9% increase from the same frame a year ago when WORLD WAR Z held onto the no. 1 spot for a 2nd weekend.
