SINGAPORE - With 134 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D), THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is possibly the widest release in Singapore ever. It grossed US$3,417,583 over the weekend - enough to become the second highest grossing film of the year behind CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (US$5,958,168 to date).
The tally rises up to US$3,774,303 with Wednesday's sneak previews added. This makes the latest Spidey pic the 3rd biggest opening film of all time in Singapore behind THE AVENGERS (US$5,766,054) and TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (US$4,162,564). Both THE AVENGERS and ASM2 also had the benefit of opening on the Labour Day holiday.
In comparison with other super-hero blockbusters, ASM2's opening numbers are slightly ahead of IRON MAN 3 (US$3,761,476 / 99 screens), and much higher than THOR: THE DARK WORLD (US$2,858,414 / 97 screens) and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (US$2,399,271 / 102 screens).
The first Andrew Garfield Spidey pic started with US$2,647,533 from 128 screens and grossed US$6,975,115 (S$8,512,779). It currently sits at no. 7 on the list of all-time biggest grossers. Sam Raimi's final Spidey pic, SPIDER-MAN 3 is no. 10 (US$5,147,057 / S$7,922,865).
In a rare showing, no other new releases manage to crack the Top 10 this weekend. The debuts include 2 edited films: the PG13 version of the sci-fi thriller ALIEN ABDUCTION (US$29,149 / 7 screens) and the 8-minute shortened R21 rated controversial award-winning film, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR (US$20,627 / 5 screens). The other 2 debuts are ONE CHANCE, the biographical musical about "Britain's Got Talent" winner Paul Potts (US$7,853 / 2 screens) and Atom Egoyan's DEVIL'S KNOT (US$5,542 / 2 screens).
Overall, the box office grossed US$3,994,994, a 162.5% increase from the last weekend and a 66.9% increase from the same frame a year ago when IRON MAN 3 held the no. 1 spot for a 2nd weekend.
