SINGAPORE - CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER spends a second weekend at no. 1 and is now the no. 1 film of 2014. It grossed another US$1,296,030 for a US$4,263,837 cume to date. That's already more than what CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER grossed in its entire run in 2011 (US$3,556,772).
Late last year, similar sequel THOR: THE DARK WORLD grossed US$4,954,073 by its second weekend on its way to a US$6,300,035 final. Even though CAP 2 is trailing 13.93% behind THOR 2 at this point, its position as one of the year's top grossers is already secured.
Coming in at no. 2 is Darren Aronofsky's NOAH starring Russell Crowe. The biblical epic is screened with 3D, IMAX 3D and D-BOX options and has grossed US$1,012,591 right out of the bullpen. It's the weekend's top screen average earner (US$14,891), edging ahead of CAP 2 but a minute US$491. It's also the 4th biggest debut of the year behind CAP 2 (US$2,399,271), ROBOCOP (US$1,428,935) and 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE (US$1,351,793).
Other debuts includes the aptly titled HAUNT (US$87,907/12 screens), BLACK COMEDY 黑色喜剧 (US$24,169/6 screens), Giuseppe Tornatore's THE BEST OFFER (US$4,898/1 screen), period crime drama IN SECRET (US$4,260/2 screens) and Terry Gilliam's THE ZERO THEOREM (US$1,857/2 screens).
Overall, the box office grossed US$2,812,125, a 13.3% dip from the last weekend but a 39.12% increase from the same frame a year ago when G.I. JOE: RETALIATION sat at no.1 for a second week.
