SINGAPORE - Opening twice as strongly as the first film and stomping its way to the top of the box office (with 3D and IMAX options), G.I. JOE: RETALIATION proved to be one of the biggest opening films in the last five years. The film gobbled up US$2,358,814 during its opening weekend across 78 screens for a mighty US$30,241 screen average. Add in Wednesday sneak previews and the total stands at US$2,428,150.
It's the 8th biggest opening film since 2007 when Box Office Mojo's data started being published, behind THE AVENGERS (2012) (US$5,766,054*), TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (2011) (US$4,162,564*), TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN (2009) (US$3,155,292*), HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - PART 2 (2011) (US$3,020,290), THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012) (US$2,650,244), THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (US$2,647,533*) and KUNGFU PANDA 2 (2011) (US$2,627,425). It's also the second highest screen average behind AH BOYS TO MEN (2012) (US$33,321) during this same period. The film's other achievements include becoming 2013's second highest grossing film so far behind AH BOYS TO MEN 2 (US$6,355,143).
RETALIATION is also on track to finish its first week with more than what G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA (2009) grossed in its entire 8-week run (US$2,505,428). A final tally above US$5m will come as no surprise, and with no major competition until OBLIVION reaches theatres two weeks later, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION still has some time to grab as much box office gold as it can.
Also opening strongly is IP MAN: THE FINAL FIGHT, Herman Yau's closing bookend chapter to the third major screen version of Ip Man in the last five years. THE FINAL FIGHT grossed US$193,044 from 19 screens for a US$9,972 screen average. This pales when compared to THE LEGEND IS BORN - IP MAN (2010), its predecessor which achieved a US$336,320 opening with a mighty US$16,015 screen average and a US$796,714 finish.
THE GRANDMASTER - the other more highly anticipated Ip Man film by Wong Kar Wai managed a stronger US$506,657 opening weekend a few months back but its collection included sneak previews. Regardless, the numbers for THE FINAL FIGHT are encouraging as it's currently the fourth biggest opening Hong Kong/China film so far this year behind JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (US$509,337), THE GRANDMASTER and THE LAST TYCOON (US$231,747).
THE HOST failed to create much excitement as it debuts below THE FINAL FIGHT with US$155,210 and a so-so US$6,748 screen average on 23 screens. Also debuting is Deepa Mehta's film adaptation of the Booker Prize winning novel MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN, sharing screenwriting credit with the book's author Salmon Rushdie. The limited release collects US$8,118 from 2 screens for a "can-be-better" screen average of US$4,059.
THE CROODS dipped an understandable 41% as it ceded the top spot to RETALIATION. The blockbuster toon has amassed US$1,717,674 to date. Amongst major animated releases in March, it trails 2010's HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, which had grossed US$2,222,406 by its second weekend, but is ahead of 2012's DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX (US$1,290,488) and 2011's RANGO (US$767,668). THE CROODS is also performing better than last year's second highest grossing animated film, ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT, which had grossed US$1,688,914 by its second weekend and finished its 8-week run with US$2,307,275.
Overall, the box office surged a hefty 79.8% ahead of the last weekend and sold a total of US$3,556,478 worth of tickets (66.32% of all tickets sold was for GI. JOE: RETALIATION). This is also a 42.41% increase over the same frame a year ago when WRATH OF THE TITANS was the top film. The US$3m ceiling was breached only five times in 2012, while it happened seven times in 2011 with one of those weekends crossing US$4m.
