It's AH BOYS all the way with 3 weeks at no. 1!

20 Feb 2013

SINGAPORE - AH BOYS TO MEN broke a record untouched for 14 years. The sequel smashed that record in less than 2 months as AH BOYS TO MEN 2 is now the highest grossing local and Asian film in Singapore of all time. The film also achieved the rare feat of holding the no.1 spot for 3 consecutive weeks (2 of those grossing above US$1m) and maintaining a consistent screen average of US$28K - something almost unheard of. The film has grossed US$5,091,158 as of Tuesday (19 Feb), outpacing the US$5,088,413 collected by the first film.

Both the PG13 muted version of A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD and Stephen Chow's JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS fail to dislodge AH BOYS with their debuts but continue to be top choices in their second weekend as all other new releases fail to ignite much interest. DIE HARD 5 has now amassed US$1,761,144 while JOURNEY has made US$1,403,020 to date.

New films that debut include the Young Adults bestseller adaptation BEAUTIFUL CREATURES (US$218,448), Jason Statham's latest action vehicle PARKER (US$104,187), romance comedy reunion THE WEDDING DIARY II (US$91,235), French-Canadian sci-fi romance UPSIDE DOWN (US$86,087), critically acclaimed HITCHCOCK (US$53,157) and Korean domestic box office hit ALL ABOUT MY WIFE (US$4,407). The re-released edited version of LES MISERABLES with a lower PG13 rating grossed US$31,747 from 6 screens.

Other Lunar New Year releases last week include the usual festive offerings HOTEL DELUXE (US$189,119 to date) and I LOVE HONG KONG 2013 (US$89,910), horror comedy VAMPS (US$6,889) and the critically acclaimed gay-theme LOST IN PARADISE (US$6,338) from Vietnam.

Doing a 4-screen limited release is the love stories collection LOVE... AND OTHER BAD HABITS - the 5th domestic title to be screened theatrically this year. The film is produced by Toggle, an entertainment service from MediaCorp. Box office figures are not available but the film lasted all of one week.

The Lunar New Year weekend (Feb 7-10) collected US$2,858,694 from 32 releases, which is an estimated 65% higher than last year's US$1,732,592 from 24 films with JOURNEY 2 THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND claiming the box office crown for the weekend of Jan 19-22.
