SINGAPORE - HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS claim the box office crown with US$829,085 from 60 screens (including IMAX 3D) for a screen average of US$13,818 and a cumulative total of US$878,605 to date.
Also making its debut is the Oscar Best Picture nominated film ZERO DARK THIRTY, which collected US$190,670 from 22 screens for a screen average of US$8,667. Fellow Oscar nominees THE SESSIONS and THE MASTER also debut but to the dismal sums of US$23,500 and US$6,009 for gross and US$2,136 and U$3,005 for screen averages respectively.
Adding to the crowded batch of new releases are the Aaron Eckhart thriller, THE EXPATRIATE (US$35,444), the Korean disaster blockbuster, THE TOWER (US$30,563), Chinese period drama THE LAST SUPPER (US$4,118) and the French drama ELLES (US$3,407). These releases struggle with screen averages in the miserable range of US$1,373 to US$3,222. Also released but unranked is the second domestic release of the year - TIME NO ENOUGH. The film was released with single daily screenings on 2 screens.
Meanwhile, Wong Kar Wai's long awaited martial arts epic drama THE GRANDMASTER collects US$151,556 from 26 screens in sneak previews. The film is slated for release on 31 Jan.
Last week's top film THE IMPOSSIBLE drops 51.2% and has collected US$666,710 to date.
Overall, the box office collected US$1,728,835 from 32 films, which is a 11.9% increase from the previous week but a 6.85% drop from the same frame a year ago when JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND held the number one spot for a second week.
