Singapore - THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY takes the no. 1 spot with US$1,729,846 - the 6th biggest opening weekend and 4th widest release of 2012. It arrives on 107 screens in up to 6 different formats - 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D, IMAX 3D HFR, 2D Dolby Atmos and 3D Dolby Atmos.
No other major films open, but THE HOBBIT's screen average of US$16,167 is far from promising. It's the second lowest amongst films that start out with US$1m and above this year. Its box office is likely to be affected the following week with the release of three major films - Jackie Chan's CZ12 (十二生肖), JACK REACHER starring Tom Cruise and Disney's latest animated hit, WRECK-IT RALPH.
Opening outside the top 10 but with decent results is the French comedy drama THE INTOUCHABLES. Box Office Mojo reports that the film grossed US$16,573 for a screen average of US$8,287 from 2 screens. However, the film is actually playing on 3 screens (Cathay, Orchard and Lido). If the US$16,573 gross stands, the per screen average would actually be US$5,524 - which is the second highest amongst this week's new releases.

BACHELORETTE debuts at no. 4 with US$87,328 from 16 screens and a screen average of US$5,458, while the Korean fantasy romance A WEREWOLF BOY debuts at no. 10 with US$40,799 from 10 screens and a screen average of US$4,080.
Also released but unranked is the Tamil film KUMKI.
Meanwhile, press reports indicate that AH BOYS TO MEN (新兵正传) has collected S$6.03m as of Monday, allowing it to break the 14-year old record held by MONEY NO ENOUGH (钱不够用) (S$6.02m) to become the highest grossing domestic film of Singapore. AH BOYS is now the 5th highest grossing film of the year.
The concert film SM TOWN LIVE IN TOKYO SPECIAL EDITION 3D was not listed in Box Office Mojo last week, but gets ranked this week. It has grossed US$62,741 to date - which is very good for this kind of release even though it does not match the success of I AM: SM TOWN LIVE WORLD TOUR IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, which grossed US$189,802 earlier this year.
After 7 consecutive weeks of growing ticket sales, the total box office of US$2,643,982 is down 11.82% compared to the same frame a year ago when MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 3 led the box office to a total gross of US$2,998,297.
